SPORTS HALL AT KARPFENTEICH, BERLIN

The subject of the realization competition is the construction of a two-field sports hall for the primary school at Karpfenteich in the Lichterfelde district.

The competition site is located in a residential area on the outskirts of the city. To the north and east, it is bordered by detached houses, while the immediate surroundings are characterized by a school complex built in the 1960s. This two-story pavilion-like building with two enclosed courtyards is intended to be sensibly complemented by the new sports hall in its volume.

The precise positioning of the new building will provide a spatial and functional extension to the school complex, addressing the existing structure anew.

The design begins with incorporating existing axes and pathways between the individual building units. The building is oriented lengthwise along Hildburghauser Straße and aligns with the building line of the neighboring structure. Due to its urban location, the sports hall acts as a spatial buffer protecting the children from Hildburghauser Straße.

The functions of the new building are clearly separated and readable from the outside. The single-story extension in front of the sports hall houses social and changing rooms, equipment rooms, and a supervisor’s room. The main entrance to the sports hall is through this extension. The single-story functional zone with changing rooms and showers connects the sports hall with the outdoor sports and playground area of the school.

The floor plan can be divided into three parts: the hall, the ancillary rooms including equipment rooms, referee room, and technical areas, and the functional zone with changing rooms, showers, and restrooms. The hall can be divided into two separate playing fields with a retractable curtain, each with its own access. The supervisor’s room is centrally located in the hall, allowing visibility of both playing fields.
