Competition sports hall at the carp pond, Berlin-Zehlendorf
Participation in the design competition:
The subject of the competition is the construction of a new sports hall for the primary school at Karpfenteich.
The competition plot is located in a residential area on the outskirts of the city. To the north and east there are open detached houses, while the immediate surroundings are characterized by the school complex built in the 60s. This two-storey pavilion-like development with two enclosed inner courtyards is to be sensibly supplemented in its cubature with the new sports hall.
Thus, the precise placement of the new buildings gives the school complex a spatial and functional expansion in order to readdress the existing building.
The starting point of the design is the inclusion of existing axes and path connections between the individual building units.
The building will be positioned longitudinally towards Hildburghauser Strasse and will take up the alignment of the neighbouring building. Due to the urban location of the sports hall, the hall acts as a spatially shielding “buffer” to Hildburghauser Straße for the protection of the children.
The functions of the individual areas of the new building are clearly separated from each other and can be read from the outside. In front of the sports hall is the single-storey extension, which accommodates social and changing rooms, equipment rooms and the supervisory room. The main access to the sports hall is via this annex. The single-storey functional zone with changing rooms and showers connects the sports hall with the outdoor sports and courtyard area of the school.
The floor plan can be divided into three parts: the hall, the ancillary rooms with equipment rooms, referee’s room and technology, and the functional zone with changing rooms, showers and toilets. The hall can be divided into two separate playing fields, both of which have separate access, with a dividing curtain. The supervision room is located in the middle of the hall and allows a view of both playing fields.
