INTERIM ACCOMMODATION FOR THE ITZ BUND
In the second half of 2022, we participated in a feasibility study as part of a selection process focused on designing a modular building in Ilmenau, Thuringia. Key aspects of our design include a responsible approach to resource use, as well as the functionality and efficiency of workflows for the end user. These principles are reflected in both the choice of building materials and the modular construction method, as well as in the clear and organized floor plan layout.
The 6,585 m² plot is located in Ilmenau, directly on Otto-Hahn-Straße, and features a north-south slope. The building’s volume is designed as a two-part structure, with two building sections (Buildings A and B) connected by central access cores and a landscaped inner courtyard. Both sections are planned as two-story buildings that step down to the south, following the natural slope of the land. This terracing ensures barrier-free access and effectively integrates the site’s topography into the design.
The office spaces are conceived as prefabricated room cells and modules, featuring deep window recesses that block direct sunlight. These recesses, combined with external louvers, provide optimal shading for the interior spaces. The frames also give the facade a three-dimensional character, creating a dynamic visual with projections and recesses while avoiding thermal bridges.
