GERMAN EMBASSY BURKINA FASO
At the beginning of 2022, our office participated in the development of a feasibility study for the construction of the new German Embassy in Burkina Faso.
The core of our design is the reddish-colored cassava concrete, which reflects the local building culture and landscape while allowing for a resource-efficient construction method. Along with its rounded corners and overall building volume, the embassy and residence align with Burkina Faso’s millennia-old tradition of round huts while also representing the modern expansion of the city in the new district of Ouaga 2000.
Given that the building is prominently in the public eye due to its function and thus serves as a model, climate protection, resource conservation, and energy efficiency play a major role. Our design addresses these concerns primarily through the use of cassava concrete (a local byproduct) and the surrounding frame with photovoltaic elements. Additionally, integrated water features and shading through window screens help minimize climate control efforts.
Another crucial aspect of the design and its energy concept is the creation of shaded areas through the frame structure and cantilevered window frames. Combined with introverted, high foyer spaces and a well-considered lighting and ventilation concept, both the embassy and residence foster a connecting atmosphere between the exterior and interior spaces.
