GAUTZSCHER PLATZ, MARKKLEEBERG

The square serves as a crucial link between the historic town center and the densely built-up area from the Gründerzeit period that began in 1871. The aim of the planning is to make the square more accessible and to keep it free from parking spaces and through traffic.

To the northwest, two new residential buildings will connect with the existing development along Koburger Straße. On the southwest portion of the square, two landmark buildings are planned, featuring retail spaces on the ground floor and residential units above. Efforts will be made to preserve the existing tree canopy to enhance the square’s appeal as a place for people to gather. The design will integrate lighting, street furniture, landscaping, and particularly the materials and colors of the paving to create a cohesive and harmonious environment.

Essential parking spaces will be accommodated in an underground garage accessible from the southwest. The square’s unique topography, with its elevation changes, will be incorporated into the design to create distinct, high-quality spaces for gathering. The square will adapt to the rising topography of Koburger Straße towards Leipzig, forming platforms with built-in seating steps that encourage relaxation and add vibrancy to the area alongside cafés and retail spaces.

Gautzscher Platz will become a focal point for visitors to Cospudener See, seamlessly connecting to the access road that leads to the lake.
