GERMAN EMBASSY IN LISBON, PORTUGAL

In November 2011, the firm Behzadi + Partner Architekten BDA was appointed as the responsible general planner for the preliminary and design planning. The execution plans were completed in early 2014, with construction beginning in August 2014 and completion in 2017.

The main focus of the planning was a comprehensive fire protection renovation, along with significant functional and energy efficiency improvements to the building.

To ensure sufficient construction space, the entire building was vacated. A separate container facility with nearly 60 office and access containers was installed in the courtyard of the complex. The preparation of this setup, in close coordination with users and authorities, was a noteworthy project in itself. Each container was lifted over the multi-story embassy building.

All fire protection systems, along with an expansion of staircase systems to the top floor, and all building services were renewed. As part of a heritage-compliant renovation, roof structures were dismantled, and windows were replaced in keeping with the original design. A temporary roof was installed to protect against weather conditions.

On May 28, 2015, the formal opening of the extensive renovation and modernization work took place in the presence of then Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
