SPORTS AND LEISURE HALL AM RABET, LEIPZIG
As part of an expert review process, an appealing urban-architectural and functional solution was to be developed for a planned three-field sports hall at the site in the eastern part of Leipzig, Rabet, intended to facilitate both school and club sports.
Our design submission received the first prize and the commission for further planning. Visitors enter the hall through a central access area that opens to the Rabet’s outdoor spaces. The hall can be divided into three functional areas. Mobile, retractable spectator galleries extend the space.
The three-field sports hall is intended to serve as an extension module to the existing recreational and sports facilities at Rabet. The new sports hall will be used for organized sports and will provide additional opportunities for school sports for nearby schools. Primarily, the hall will support competitive and league play. Its urban location acts as a spatial buffer from Hermann-Liebmann-Strasse. The building is divided into the main sports hall structure (approx. 11.00 m high), flanked by a social area and a gym equipment area (approx. 4.50 m high).
All exterior walls are made of reinforced concrete elements. On the additions, the main sports of the hall—basketball, handball, and volleyball—are depicted. The color design of the elements symbolizes the diverse and vibrant future use of the new sports hall as a community center.
