SECONDARY SCHOOL KOLMSTRAßE

As part of a design competition, the goal was to develop an urbanistically, architecturally, and functionally attractive solution for the planned construction of a three-class secondary school with a triple sports hall on Kolmstraße in Leipzig.

Generous pathways and numerous sightlines create connections and, combined with the new building structures of the secondary school and sports hall, establish a symbolic bridge between the new constructions and the surrounding nature.

The secondary school and sports hall are designed as multifunctional spaces, with flexibility enabled by a skeleton construction method. This construction approach allows for the adaptable adjustment of room sizes and dimensions to meet changing needs. The room layouts are designed to support a variety of teaching methods and educational concepts. With mobile and adjustable walls, rooms can be flexibly divided or opened as needed.

The sports hall is designed as a multifunctional three-court facility, suitable for both school sports and competitive or club sports. It includes four retractable bleachers distributed across all three sections of the hall, accommodating up to 199 spectators, thus fulfilling its role in community and competition functions.

The architecture organizes learning spaces, public areas, and communal and service spaces within three building sections. Together with the standalone sports hall, they form a harmonious ensemble.

The choice of materials and architectural language reflects and extends the characteristics of the natural surroundings.

This ensemble is flexibly designed to support modern educational concepts. The roofs of the side wings and the sports hall are greened and also host photovoltaic systems, while the central section features a rooftop garden designed as a space for relaxation during breaks.
