Competition Tourist Information Centre Hohenwarte, Hohenwarte Reservoir, Thuringian Sea
Together with Diba Tensile Architecture from Tehran, we developed the design of a tourist information centre on the banks of the Hohenwarte reservoir in the nature reserve of the so-called Thuringian Sea.
The special location in the nature reserve and the prevailing winds at this point inspired the design of the tower in its special basic form.
Known as “flagging”, trees often lose their branches on one side due to a rigid strong wind direction or align their branches with the prevailing wind direction (wind fleeers). The prevailing wind directions from the southwest and northeast at the site inspired the design in its triangular shape from the “flags” of the trees.
Balanced like a dancer, the tower appears to be twisted, the upper part facing the water of the Hohenwarte dam, the lower part facing the forest and the direction of access. Its triangular shape gives the tower a great opportunity to create different viewing platforms with a view of the dam as well as the forest and the access area. Although the wind and the wind currents themselves are not visible, they present themselves in the basic form of the design and become a visible, rigid realization of these forces of nature.
